The first races were held in 1864 and as part of Pope John Paull II visit Ireland in 1979, he celebrated mass on the racecourse for 280,000 people. Attending Ballybrit Racecourse in 1869 were 40,000 people in 2 days and has now grown to over 145,000 during the annual Galway Races.
