Castlecomer Discovery Park is located in the town of the same name and is its largest attraction. The park consists of an estate with Castlecomer House which dates back to the 1600s, a visitor centre, the lakes and Castlecomer Plateau where mining began in the mid-17th century.
There is plenty to do in the discovery park from adrenaline-filled adventure activities to wonderful water sports. Take a journey on the tree-top walk and climbing wall or the orienteering and walking trails, try out the zipline and octagon, sail on the Castlecomer lakes with boat and canoeing activities or visit the coal mining museum. There are plenty of team challenges too, including axe throwing, archery and raft and catapult building.
The park is perfect for families with plenty of activities for the kids such as Timber Tumbles Playground, Junior Woodland Course, Elf and Fairy Village, a Digital Scavenger Hunt and the Bouncing Net. Days out can also be booked for schools or large groups, like hen parties, stag parties, corporate and birthday parties.
The discovery centre is open most days from 10am to 5pm and outdoor activities are available from 11am to 3pm. There are 2 restaurants, The Redwood Café and The Canopy Café with options for all.
The 80-acre woodland park receives approximately 120,000 visitors every year and is a part of Ireland’s Ancient East. In 2015, Castlecomer Discovery Park won the ‘Kilkenny Chamber of Commerce Business’ Award for Culture/Heritage Tourism. It was also listed as one of the three ‘Best Family Attractions’ in Leinster in 2012 and 2013.
